The 2024 Outstanding Undergraduate Summer Camp of the College of AI at Tsinghua University has come to a successful conclusion.

On May 25, 2024, the first-ever Outstanding Undergraduate Summer Camp of the College of AI at Tsinghua University concluded successfully in the Multi-function Hall on the second floor of the FIT Building. More than 130 outstanding undergraduates from well-known domestic universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, participated in the camp. They attended promotional meetings, visited laboratories, and had face-to-face communications with mentors.

The Academic Committee of the College of AI consists of academicians Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Zhang Bo, Dai Qionghai, Zhang Yaqin, Hu Shimin, and Duan Luming from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, Department of Computer Science, Department of Automation, and Institute of AI-driven Intelligent Industries at Tsinghua University. They are committed to building a world-class base for gathering and training top-notch AI talents.

Review of the Promotional Meeting

Dean Andrew Chi-Chih Yao was the first to take the stage to extend a warm welcome to all the participants of the first-ever Outstanding Undergraduate Summer Camp of the College of AI. He expressed his sincere welcome to the students and teachers who had come to the College of AI for this event. He emphasized that the mission of the College of AI is to gather and cultivate top-notch AI talents. With a strong faculty base, the college will offer research directions in the foundations of AI theory and algorithms, embodied intelligence, and AI-plus fields. Dean Yao highlighted the significant importance of AI research for both science and society. He encouraged the students to fully realize their potential and contribute to the nation and the world.

Following Dean Yao's speech, several part-time faculty members of the College of AI introduced their research groups' scientific research directions and latest progress. Research groups led by Li Shengbo, Shenyang, Wang Xiaowo, Yu Jiakuo, Wang Hongning, Deng Dongling, Gao Yang, Ma Kaisheng, Xu Huazhe, and Yi Li respectively introduced their latest exploration results in cutting-edge fields such as autonomous driving, AIGC, bioinformatics, AI-assisted diagnosis and treatment, AI security, quantum AI, embodied AI, brain-computer interface, chip design, generalization of reinforcement learning, and human-computer interaction.

Laboratory visits

The participants of the College of AI summer camp also followed their tutors into the laboratories to experience the academic atmosphere of each research group. The laboratories open to visitors that day included the Future Media Laboratory of Tsinghua University, the Institute for International Governance of AI, the Laboratory of Multimedia Signal and Intelligent Information Processing, the Laboratory of Imaging and Intelligent Technology, the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems and Robotics, the Laboratory of Intelligence and Biomechanics, and the Intelligent Vehicle Laboratory.

During the visit, the tutors introduced to the participants the current development and innovative achievements of the laboratories. At the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems and Robotics, the participants watched a demonstration of the achievements of the new full-size humanoid robot, Xiaoxing MAX, and interacted with the humanoid robot, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere.

One-on-One Communication with Tutors

The summer camp also set up a one-on-one communication session between tutors and participants. Through discussions, the participants gained a further understanding of the tutors' professional fields, research directions and recruitment needs. The tutors' rich academic achievements and practical experience sparked the participants' strong interest in scientific research and provided guidance and inspiration for future application and development.
